Barnabas Fund launches new food.gives initiative to feed hungry, poor and persecuted Christians.

12 June 2021: international Christian aid agency Barnabas Fund launched food.gives, a major new initiative to help hungry, poor and persecuted Christians around the world.

Using its long-established and trusted network of partner churches, Barnabas Fund will now channel not just financial donations, but also dried food from Christians in the West, through Christians, to hungry Christians in places of pressure and persecution.

Covid makes global food need even more acute

It is estimated that in 2020 at least 155 million people were “acutely food insecure and in need of assistance” in 55 countries, the highest level of need for at least five years. With the devastating impact of Covid-19 on the global economy, that need will only become worse, states Barnabas Fund, which supports hundreds of projects providing practical help to persecuted Christians in dozens of countries every year.

Anti-Christian discrimination can mean that Christians are the last to receive help from their government or international aid. Food donated through food.gives will save lives and spare Christians from hunger pangs, malnutrition and disease. Well-nourished bodies are better able to resist infectious diseases such as Covid-19.

In some countries, there is no food to buy

The food shortage is so acute in many countries that, even though sending money may be quicker, there is not enough food available to buy and prices can be very high. Barnabas Fund also cannot send money to a number of countries because of sanctions applied by their governments. But it can send food.
