Weighty task

As a young boy I had the opportunity to grow potatoes. With due consideration to this weighty task I took a sprouting potato to the bottom of the garden. I dug a hole and lowered it into the ground. Covered up, I left it alone and went to play elsewhere in the garden. But it drew me back again and again, each time I watered it. Why couldn’t I see any growth, I was being most patient? Finally, after three hours, in disgust I dug it up again. It must be a faulty potato! There was no visible change from when I had planted it, no one had told me that it might be months before anything began to show.

Time investment

I regularly preach on the power of words, especially when we speak in Jesus’ authority; both for good and bad, and to open and shut doors. NOT the ‘hyper-faith’ I have sometimes encountered…. someone with a thick cold and looking dreadful sneezes, ‘I do not have a cold, I am well in Jesus name’ and reacts defensively if any contrary observations are made. What I refer to is the planting of good seed through word, prayer and indeed prophecy which may take years to ‘manifest’ in this world. This kind of faith looks above and beyond, without denying current facts.

Give it time ….

Back to the humble potato; recently I felt God speak to me in mild exasperation, ‘I wish you wouldn’t keep digging up what you have planted.’ I realised that some good prayers and prophesies were being undermined by words I was speaking later on, sorry God! I kept digging up the good seed (potato) and it wasn’t getting any chance to grow. We don’t want double-mindedness, may God help us to, through faith and patience inherit the promises. (Heb 6 v12b)
