A conversation I once overheard: woke person – “you hate liberals”. The other person (after a slight pause) “I don’t know ANY liberals”. The point being made, surely, was that so-called ‘liberal values’ are today anything but! The Oxford dictionary definition of Liberal ” open handed, generous, not sparing, open minded, unprejudiced, free from pedantry, munificence, freedom from narrow views” (1931 edition). What a different world we live in today. I have always been struck by the fact that ‘liberals’ are most vociferous about the killing of babies in the mother’s womb as their flagship ‘liberal’ value. I just don’t see how killing babies is a liberal thing to do.
Today so-called ‘liberals’ are insistent that they will not allow any contrary views, hence the so-called ‘cancel culture’, a term that surely means they have already lost the argument and so must prevent freedom of speech or contrary thought. Christian Comment – of course all ‘cancel’ culture is about having to ignore inconvenient truths. The most inconvenient truth of all, surely, is that no-one can enter the Kingdom of God unless they are first “born again”. That’s a subject that most liberals want to be ‘cancelled’ or ignored. Jesus said that hell is “the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matt 25:41), but also for those who join them in their rebellion against God (Matt 11:20-24). The horror of hell is such that Jesus says, “if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire” (Mark 9:43). For those who do not enter the narrow door of faith and repentance in Jesus (Luke 13:24) a place of weeping and gnashing teeth awaits them (Luke 13:28).
One cannot feel that ‘liberals’ will be far more offended to find themselves eternally separated from all that is good, wholesome, and beautiful. Eternally offended? But still they place their heads in the sand, hoping it will all somehow go away. How foolish! How sad!
