Can you cause demons to flee? Roger Dunsdon considers.
WRONG QUESTION
This short piece started with a question that is, frankly, the wrong question to ask. If you ask the wrong question, you inevitably get the wrong answer. The question was “how can I scare a demon away with a bible verse”?
It is unlikely you will ‘scare’ a demon away. Fear is the bread and butter of a demon. They feed on it. Principally upon YOUR fear.
What drives a demon away is the word of God spoken with authority, a command given in the name of Jesus.
It is necessary that the person giving the command know that they have authority from God to take authority over demons. If you don’t know this with clarity then you will fold at the first bit of resistance.
Verses to give you confidence and authority are …..
Mark 16:17
17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;
1 Peter 5:8-9
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
James 4:7
7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
THE NAME OF JESUS
There are several examples in the gospels in which Jesus modelled how to resist the devil. Seek those bible portions to see how He did it, then read and meditate the ones above. As your confidence grows, you will find yourself naturally resisting the devil.
Calling out the Lord Jesus’ name will help, if you know Him.

Calling out God’s name as Jehovah can be a protection, again if we truly know him.
Proverbs 18:10 — The name of Jehovah is a strong tower. Into it the righteous runs, and is given protection.
Psalm 91:9–10 — Because you [said]: “Jehovah is my refuge,” you have made the Most High himself your dwelling. No calamity will befall you, and not even a plague will draw near to your tent.
James 2:19 — You believe there is one God, do you? You are doing quite well. And yet the demons believe and shudder.
James 4:7 — Subject yourselves, therefore, to God. But oppose the Devil, and he will flee from you.

NOT A MANTRA
The Bible is not a mantra and should not be used in that way. There are not ‘magic formulas’ to deal with demons. But there is POWER in the name of Jesus for those who believe on Him and have built their life on Him.
Even for those who do not know Jesus, yet there is power in the Word of God itself. It should be used judiciously as a weapon (Ephesians 6:17). Demons cannot bear to hear the Word of God, for in it they know that ultimately their own doom is sealed for eternity. No wonder they shudder (James 2: 19).
SINGLE COMBAT?
Christians should not try to ‘take on’ demonic forces alone. If you are suffering demonic oppression or outright attack, then seek the assistance and wisdom of a trusted Christian friend to help navigate the spiritual battle you may just be about to enter into. Finally, it is good to understand a little of your ultimate spiritual adversary. This resource should be of value:
