Peter Sammons reviews a new and very timely book from author Steve Maltz
IRREVOCABLY CHANGED

Steve maltz’s new book addresses this huge question in an intelligent, informed, and non academic way. This is a novella. It’s back cover blurb asks, ‘will the world ever be the same again’?

BELIEVABLE STORY
Although a novella, one gets the sense there’s a lot of the author’s personal experience wrapped in. Does this book hit the mark? The novella is believable insofar that it asks and answers a number of awkward questions that are on the minds of most thoughtful and intelligent people. So, why are people so worked up about Gaza when they care absolutely nothing for ongoing much bigger situations of violence and injustice? Why are Jews so hated?
The novella’s key character, Derek Courtney, is not especially worldly – wise , and not especially ‘political’, yet he asks basic questions that many people are asking today. And questions that many more people ought to be asking!
Derek Courtney embarks on a journey of discovery, seeking to understand the world’s great hatred of Israel and the Jews. He meets anti -Israel protesters, and also Jewish folk. With his wife alongside Derek Courtney determines to follow the evidence – wherever it may lead.
DIGGING DEEPER
The novella is Part 1 of the book. In Part 2 Steve Maltz explores in a more forensic way all this stuff, yet still in an accessible and easy to read style. The book hits the mark as a literary exercise, yet it also has a mission to inform and challenge. (Do people really want to be informed, and challenged?!).
In “Now Everything Changes”, sub-titled: one man’s search for truth in a world gone mad, you effectively get two short books, in one! The novella helps the reader empathise with the reality of what is going on and to recognise that the world has, indeed, gone mad in so many ways, but especially as regards one people group – namely the Jews. Part 2 of the book helps readers to dig a little deeper, throwing up both questions and helpful answers.
What sort of reader will like, and benefit from, this new book? Certainly, people who see what is going on and feel that they they do not properly understand what is happening, will find this a useful anchor point. It will give them some basic background, and the tools to search out further what is true, and what is false. This book is not aimed at a Christian readership, in particular. Rather, it is aimed at a general readership who are uncomfortable with the world’s trajectory and feel that they must know more, before it is too late.
I must confess that I do not particularly like novels or imaginary stories, yet I enjoyed this book. It is a relatively easy read and it is intelligent. Overall it is a worthwhile, informative and thought -provoking book, and one certainly to give away to sensible people asking sensible questions.
