The purported human ‘right’ to end one’s own life fits, like a glove, that worldview we must ultimately call Babel-ism.
But why, right now, the extreme push towards voluntary euthanasia, a ‘freedom’ that may well soon become involuntary euthanasis? We should note straightway that the British implementation of the religion of abortion provides a profound cautionary tale. When introduced in the UK in 1967 we were told (but not all believed) that there would be watertight safeguards against abuse. Abortion would always be an exceptional procedure, with two doctors signing-off, and suitable pre-abortion counselling. Now the religion of abortion has become an industry (funded indirectly by the NHS) which has led to profound social change. More than ten million UK babies have been destroyed in the mother’s womb since 1967, and that amongst a total live population of seventy millions. For every seven people you see walking around, another one has been destroyed before birth. Britain ‘imports’ its population from foreign countries, just as it imports so much else besides.
Stabilisation
We ask again why, right now, the extreme push towards ‘voluntary’ euthanasia? Apart from Babel-ism and the childlike fear of death (for heaven’s sake, we all have to die sometime!) there is something new abroad. There is here undoubtedly something about population control and population replacement, a matter on which the main UK political parties are in broad agreement, if for differing reasons. But bluntly the global elite are determined to ‘stabilise’ the world population at what they see as a manageable 4 billion, which implies that sooner or later a lot of people must die untimely deaths. Untimely deaths can be achieved through war, manufactured medical externalities (so-called ‘pandemics’, and medically questionable medical counter-interventions), abortion, and euthanasia.
In Britain the ageing population will become (if not already is) an unaffordable burden on ‘society’. The Bible tells us that Mankind’s natual span is ‘threescore years and ten’ (Psalm 90:10) and it would appear that the State has taken this biblical injunction to heart, despite disparaging all other aspects of God’s self- revelation. The actuary tells us that economically, if you are still here after eighty, you’d better have a very good reason (and a bank balance to defend yourself). If the State can persuade people that they or their families would be better off if somehow they were no longer ‘here’, then a huge financial burden can be broadly curtailed. Euthanasia needs to become fashionable, even a fashion accessory.
Incentivise
What I have just said is a necessary over- simplification of the broader social policy imperitives, but it is the unspoken reality. So, in the future pre-suicide ‘counselling’ will take on the characteristics of the ‘counselling’ of expectant mothers who are battling the thought of abortion. First, it will be wholly affirmative (“go on, do it”), and secondly any serious counter argument will be made illegal. We have only to think of the so-called ‘buffer zones’ to see how this will pan out over the longer term. It is entirely possible that the State will offer financial incentives to exit early. So, if you suffer a long term illness and the State can actuarislise the cost of treating you, they may offer your family or other nominated beneficiary a proportion of that cost (let’s say, 5%). Or perhaps your family will be given a generous grant of say £30K to cover funeral and other expenses, with no restriction on how such a grant shall be spent – so perhaps a nice foreign holiday to help ‘get over’ the sadness of the loss of the recently departed. Perhaps even a reduction of death duty for the families of those who ‘do the right thing’ , and arrange an early ‘exit’ (read, suicide).
On the political Left especially, these considerations loom large. They are there, but they are unspoken. If (when?) voluntary euthanasia comes, it will open an evil Pandora’s box of possibilities for the State, which in any case opearates a two-tier justice system. It will probably also operate a two-tier euthanasia system.
Christian response?
Jesus said, “let the dead bury their dead” (Luke 9:60). As the disparaging of the elderly is one of the social signs of the coming end time, we should not be surprised. Rather we ‘lift up our heads’ (Luke 21:28) and recognise the evil hour as it approaches. As the old addage has it, ‘it is always darkest before the dawn’. That the unsaved will kill each other in open defiance of God’s sovereign law is a sad reminder of the nature of the Babel- world that Mankind is determined to develop, a world made ultimately in Man’s image – or perhaps we should say in Man’s chosen Prince’s image (John 14:30).
Yes we will, as Christians, counsel against euthanasia. There are other methods of dealing with terrible suffering beyond just killing the elderly or sick. But we are moving towards Homo-Deus. Ultimately Mankind will do as his chosen Prince directs. But one day our Lord will return …….
