As unprecedented new technologies emerge, they raise questions about our sense of values. Peter Sammons considers.
Three Parents
Eight “Three parent” babies have been born via ‘pioneering’ IVF techniques developed by the Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Foundations Trust, Newcastle University, and Newcastle Fertility Centre. Four boys and four girls, including one set of identical twins. Today these babies range in age from 6 months to 2 years.
Reportedly all are healthy (according to the progressive stream media), although a note of caution is sounded by the Christian Institute in this report: https://www.christian.org.uk/news/eight-gm-babies-born-from-three-parent-ivf-in-uk/?mc_cid=6dec08ac36&mc_eid=6cf19dabfe
The experimental process is called ‘mitochondrial donation treatment’, where scientists take a genetic embryo from two parents, and transplant that into a separate fertislised embryo with healthy mitochondria donated by a separate mother – making three parents in all, at DNA level. The point in all this is that without the treatment, the couples involved would confer adverse mitochondrial mutation, which could have massive later life effects, such as heart disease, brain or muscle retardation. Apparently approx 5,000 babies are born in UK each year with mitochondrial mutation.
Life promoted, or terminated?
At one level as Christians we might take the view that Mankind has been given sufficient intelligence and (now) the practical mechanisms to enable such advanced technologies to positively aid human life. But perhaps underlying this development is the rather sad spectre of the reality of the UK abortion industry which “terminated” (or killed, depending on your choice of language) more than 300,000 babies in varying states of development in 2024 – that’s 820 a day. All funded by the NHS.
Swallowing camels
Jesus spoke of people straining at gnats and swallowing camels (Matthew 23: v24) in their pursuit of purity. Today we think nothing of killing babies right up to birth, if Britain’s present government gets it’s way as it seeks to liberalise abortion law (see link below). Yet we simultaneously parrot our success before the whole world in creating a baby in a genetically ‘modified’ form, so that it will have the best ‘chance’ of a healthy life. Something is not right in our sense of values, or the way we view the sanctity of life. Swallowing camels ……
