Recognizing a ‘friend’, if at a distance

It’s official. Britain, through it’s far-Left / Islamised government, has now recognized ‘Palestine’ as a ‘state’. This was announced 21 September 2025 on the eve of the ancient annual Jewish festival of ‘Trumpets’ (Yom Teruah, known more popularly today as Rosh Hashanah – the Jewish New Year).

We have known since 1948 that at some point ‘the world’ will arise against Eretz Israel – Zechariah 14:2. That ancient prophecy, never before realized in practice, seems now to be ‘imminent’ in the broad historical metanarrative. Not tomorrow, perhaps, but in this present generation? We can posit the likelihood that today’s new found ambition of the world – to create yet another ‘state’ – will leave Israel languishing in pariah status as this new ‘state’ continues to fail in terms of governance, legitimacy, and viability. Cue billions more investment from the European Union and a never-ending demand for more money and more political (and military?) support.

A failed state, even before it has been conjured up by the world? Certainly ‘Palestine’ is non-viable; it has no boundaries and no recognised ‘shape’. Mr Starmer’s assumption is that his new found partner for peace and stability will be carved-out from Eretz Israel’s existing land which presently represents just 14 one-thousandths of one percent of the world’s total land mass. And this imagined ‘Palestine’ will presumably be even smaller (or will it, in the world’s ambition?).

International criteria for a state to be recognized are defined by the Montevideo Convention . This specifies having a permanent population, a defined territory, a government, and the capacity to enter into relations with other states. These criteria are based on the declarative theory of statehood, where an entity is considered a state if it possesses these attributes, regardless of recognition by other nations. Recognition by other states then functions as a political act confirming the new state’s existence and its ability to participate in the international community.

By these measures, ‘Palestine’ is not a state and is nowhere near being one, but why let legal niceties stand in the way? Britain has not allowed legal realities to govern its peculiar relationship with Mauritius, so perhaps we are beginning to see a pattern emerging from Britain’s ex- ‘Director of Public Prosecutions’, that laws can be bent and bent again to suit pressing domestic political challenges …..

Incidentally, this new ‘Palestine’ will not come cheap to the British exchequer, unless of course Mr Starmer thinks that the USA will do all the financial ‘heavy-lifting’ …..

Can a nation be born in a day?

Isaiah 66:8 has long been understood, at least by Christians holding to a pre-millennial hermeneutic, to reflect 14 May 1948 (when Israel became a nation overnight, and when Britain simultaneously declined to recognize this event as a reality). Yes, a nation was born on that date and eventually Britain was compelled – albeit reluctantly – to accept the reality.

21 September 2025 may be an evil (even demonic) parody of May 1948, where a ‘nation’ that has never existed suddenly becomes a reality – at least in the imaginations of certain failing politicians. Other nations aligned to Kier Starmer (Australia, Canada and France, at the time of writing, with the common factor of a growing domestic Islamic consituency) each suffer huge political uncertainties and grossly unpopular governments. Perhaps each of their heads of state seeks to carve-out for themselves some viable footnote in history. Whilst I claim no status as prophet, I would hazard an educated guess that each of the leaders of the relevant nations will leave office with their reputations mired – in perpetuity. Those who bless you I will bless. Those who curse you I will curse …… See Genesis 12:3.

Immovable stone

On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves. (Zechariah 12:3).

This prophecy has never yet come to pass. In recognizing ‘Palestine’ PM Kier Starmer, and the other Western ‘leaders’ plus the ‘United Nations’, have left unanswered the profound question of the status of Jerusalem, and this question will remain a stumbling block into the indeterminate future. The Bible tells us Jerusalem is actually going to break those politicians who seek what shall amount to a ‘two-city solution’ to their self-created problem. Today, the nations are indeed gathered against Israel – politically, culturally and socially. They are indeed sowing a wind, and will reap a whirlwind as their reward.

It gives me no satisfaction to write in these terms, but it gives me both satisfaction and huge confidence that God has warned ahead of time. Like that puppet on the proverbial string, the world must dance in fury against Israel, but in so doing they will only heap more and more calamities on themselves, and upon their nations. How tragic. But how magnificent that we Bible students know how all this will end. Ultimately God promises to Israel it’s time of peace (2 Samuel 7:10; Hebrews 3: 18 – 4:1), and God’s plans remain forever (Psalm 33: 10-11). Neither Starmer nor Macron nor anyone else is going to deflect God’s promise of peace, and nor will they escape falling into the snares they have laid for Israel. Not for nothing does the Bible posit a time of very great tribulation. Starmer’s 21 September 2025 announcement simply guarantees Britain its uncomfortable and ultimately disastrous role in the incipent challenges lying ahead.

Trumpeting our loyalties

The Moed of Trumpets represents a time of ingathering of Israelites (should that be Israelis?); in-gathering so they can worship God in Jerusalem and give thanks for the annual harvest. Whilst this is an ancient Moed applicable to Israel, yet there is a profound Christolgical sub-text, as Christ gathers-in His eternal people, both Jew and Gentile to worship eternally in the eternal Jerusalem.

In my book “The Messiah Pattern” I argue that the next big event in God’s eschatological plan is the persistent sounding of Trumpets, warning us of the closeness of Jesus’ return. In this world there will be more and more trumpet blasts, and they will become louder and more insistent. But the world at large will either not ‘hear’, or they will widely misinterpret. In terms of 21 September 2025, ironically the world itself has sounded its own mighty trumpet blast but cannot know or understand its meaning, and its attendant call to repentance (for that is what any shofar blast always calls us to, in the spiritual realm).

As the world ‘recognizes’ it’s new friend and dependent, so Jewish people across the planet will find increasingly that they are less and less welcome where they are, and that the most viable home for them is ……. Etetz Israel. This global shofar blast is indeed a call to Jewish people to in-gather. God is calling them home, and ‘the world’ is simultaneously making a rod for its own back.

Prime Minister Kier Starmer trumpets his support for ‘Palestine’, believing that now is a suitable time to do so. There is a sense of ‘safety in numbers’ for Mr Starmer, as in this ‘recognition’ will be a cacophony of voices from across the planet – expect Putin, Xi, and so many others, to do precisely the same thing. Safety in numbers?

At this time of trumpet blasts, and this loudest one of all (at least at present, 21 September 2025) it is perhaps ironic that President Trump will stand aloof, and just as ironic, he may represent an immovable stone that frustrates the World’s agenda at this particular point in time. On the day that the USA mourned the murder of a singular man – Charlie Kirk – a man who stood for peace and civility, Britain’s Kier Starmer determined to announce a profoundly flawed ‘policy’ because he thought he could achieved the unacceptable at the minimal political cost. He went with the herd ….

Notably the Conservatives under Mrs Kemi Badenoch, and indeed insurgent Reform under Mr Nigel Farage, both declared the Starmer announcement to be profoundly wrong, and raising in its wake a raft of unanswered questions. Whether this may presage a change of national policy in the future I somewhat doubt, but as they say, the Lord moves in mysterious ways, and He is sovereign.

Judgment

It seems unlikely that Britain (or the other nations) will emerge from this decision unscathed. Huge problems are building, and God is not mocked. Financial crash, recession, and attendant high unemployment beckon. War drums are beating. It will all be put down to the inept governments across the West, of course. The peoples by and large will not acknowledge the reality of judgment nor their own personal culpability, just as the ancient Israelites ignored God’s warnings before both the Assyrian and the Babylonian exiles of the Tanach.

But Jesus said, when you hear these things begin lift up your heads , your time of redemption draws near (Luke 21: 28) . Praise Him. Fix your eyes on Him, for He is coming soon. Trumpet blasts are alerting us!
